• Take full ownership of a portfolio of small to medium-sized business clients across various industries, acting as the primary point of accountability for their financial affairs.
• Prepare and review financial statements, including profit & loss, balance sheet, and cash flow reports.
• Review reconciliations (bank, credit card, and balance sheet) prepared by junior staff, ensuring accuracy and integrity of the underlying data.
• Oversee accounts payable/receivable processes for the portfolio, resolving escalated or complex issues.
• Review and lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS) and Instalment Activity Statements (IAS), ensuring accurate GST treatment and coding.
• Prepare and review income tax returns for individuals, companies, trusts, and partnerships.
• Ensure compliance with relevant Australian tax legislation, ATO requirements, and accounting standards.
• Provide guidance on tax planning and structuring opportunities for clients.
• Oversee end-to-end payroll processes, including superannuation, PAYG withholding, and Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting, ensuring compliance with Fair Work and relevant awards.
• Act as escalation point for complex payroll or employee-related queries.
• Work across and provide guidance on cloud-based accounting platforms including Xero, MYOB, and QuickBooks.
• Lead system setup, data migration, and optimisation projects for client accounting systems.
• Identify and implement opportunities to automate processes and improve efficiency through technology.
• Serve as a trusted advisor to clients, building long-term relationships and providing strategic financial guidance beyond day-to-day bookkeeping.
• Liaise directly with clients on financial performance, compliance matters, and business advisory needs.
• Manage client expectations, communicate proactively, and resolve complex or sensitive issues.
• Lead month-end and year-end close processes, including reviewing reconciliations and journal entries prepared by junior staff.
• Prepare management reports and financial analysis to support client decision-making.
• Identify discrepancies, irregularities, or risk areas, and recommend corrective action or process improvements.
• Review and provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior accountants and bookkeepers, including reviewing their work for accuracy and compliance.
• Manage multiple client engagements and deadlines across the team, ensuring high-quality, timely delivery.
• Maintain organised, audit-ready working papers and documentation.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives within the accounting function, including process and systems enhancements.
• Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written
• CA or CPA qualified (or very close to completion)
• Strong technical knowledge of Australian tax, BAS/GST, and payroll compliance
• Proven ability to manage a client portfolio autonomously and lead a team
• Ability to prioritise and manage multiple engagements to meet deadlines
